the Journey Gets Harder Before It Gets Better...

🤷🏻‍♂️ Life & Thoughts

Building a business is hard work, no doubt about it. There’s a point in every journey where it feels like you’re pushing uphill, with no end in sight. But that’s where The Dip comes in.

The Dip, by Seth Godin, talks about those tough moments when things feel impossible, and it gives us insight into why sticking it out can lead to the biggest rewards.

I will keep it short, but I wanted to share my takeaways and thoughts from the book, which may help you grab a copy!

The Dip: Why Every Journey Gets Harder Before It Gets Better

  • The Dip is that rough patch before the payoff: In every worthwhile endeavor, there’s a phase when things get really tough—sales slow, motivation dips, doubts creep in. But Godin explains that pushing through this phase is what separates the successful from those who give up too soon.
  • Not all dips are equal: Sometimes, the “dip” is a sign that you need to adjust your strategy, not quit. It’s about knowing when to persevere and when to pivot. When building a business, not every challenge is a reason to abandon ship. It’s a test to see if you’re in it for the long haul.

Why Sticking It Out is Worth It

  • High rewards come after the hardest work: The Dip reminds us that those who persist are the ones who reap the biggest rewards. The longer you push, the closer you get to breakthroughs that can’t happen if you quit early.
  • The Dip builds resilience: Pushing through tough times strengthens you. It builds resilience, and resilience is what keeps you moving forward in the face of new challenges. In business, every “dip” you conquer prepares you for the next level.

Key Takeaways from The Dip for Building a Business

  1. Identify your dip: Understand the difference between a temporary setback and a real dead end. Ask yourself: Is this a dip that I can overcome with effort, or is it a sign that I need to make a change?
  2. Lean into the discomfort: Growth only happens when you’re willing to push through what’s uncomfortable. In business, that might mean doubling down on marketing, taking new risks, or working through long hours. Embrace it, and know that the hard work pays off.
  3. Know when to stick and when to quit: The Dip emphasises that quitting isn’t always a bad thing—it’s about quitting the wrong things to make room for the right ones. If a strategy or product isn’t working, don’t be afraid to pivot. But if you’re on a path you believe in, keep pushing.
  4. Success loves consistency: The dip phase is about sticking with the fundamentals, even when it’s boring or feels like it’s going nowhere. Consistency is key to pushing through the dip.

Bottom Line: The Dip is Hard, But Worth It

Building a business means facing the dip and making the decision to push through. It’s not about avoiding hard work or finding shortcuts—it’s about facing challenges head-on, learning from them, and letting them fuel your growth.

So, the next time you’re feeling stuck, remember: The Dip isn’t there to stop you; it’s there to prepare you for success. Embrace it, learn from it, and use it as a reminder that the best rewards come after the hardest work.

Here is a growth over time view VS month to month view:

  • this is not my dip, I think all of this will be my dip when I look back
